Wilshire Vista NA Board Updates

August 14, 2024

Thank you to everyone who responded to our call for volunteers in the last newsletter. We are fortunate to have a community dedicated to making Wilshire Vista a great place to live. In this edition, we’ll introduce two new board members and share some of their exciting contributions. We also have additional volunteer opportunities, updates on recent projects we are working on, and notable community and land use projects. And of course, we have our regular columns featuring neighborhood businesses and updated housing trends. We hope you find this information helpful and we always appreciate hearing your feedback.

Sincerely,

Wilshire Vista Neighborhood Association

Board Updates

The Wilshire Vista Neighborhood Association is excited to introduce our new Secretary and Creative Logistics Director, Julie Collinson, and our new Creative Director and Website Administrator, Matthew Peridis. Julie and Matt have generously offered their creative expertise and have already started some exciting projects that we’re featuring in this edition. We are thrilled to welcome Matt and Julie to the board and extend our sincere thanks for their immediate involvement in so many board initiatives.

Open Board Positions

Our current treasurer, Maisie Short, has announced her decision to step down. Maisie has dedicated four years of service to the Wilshire board, and we are thankful for her commitment and support in the role of treasurer. We are now actively seeking a new volunteer to serve as our Treasurer. This position requires some familiarity with Excel and expense tracking, and previous treasurer or finance experience is not necessary. If you are interested in learning more about the open Treasurer role, please reach out to Kim Orlando at president@wilshirevista.org.

Are you looking to become more involved in the community? Joining the WVNA board is an excellent way to make a positive impact on the neighborhood. Elections for all board seats will be held this coming spring, in March 2025. Kim Orlando, our acting President, has decided not to run for board re-election next spring. As a result, we will need volunteers to step into various board roles, including the position of President. If you think you might be interested in serving on the board, now is the perfect time to engage with our committees and events to learn more about WVNA, different board positions, and how we work to support the neighborhood.

Updated Wilshire Vista Logo & Website

Matt and Julie have been diligently working to give the neighborhood association a fresh new look, starting with fine-tuning our logo and refreshing the Wilshire Vista website. The enhanced Wilshire Vista logo preserves the vintage charm of our century-old community while giving it a modern touch with a simplified look and feel. This elevated style will now be showcased on all WVNA signage and communications, including our newly designed website.

We've revamped the website with a fresh design and added even more information about our community. You can now visit the site to learn about the association's history, view the latest newsletter, find local and city resources, and discover ways to get involved and support our neighborhood. Check it out!

Wilshire Vista Signage Project

The WVNA board is making progress with plans to replace the faded Wilshire Vista signs at some of the intersections surrounding the neighborhood. After exploring various funding options, we are asking you, our community, for additional support to bridge the gap. Can you make a donation to help us update these faded signs and give our neighborhood the refresh it deserves?

PICO NC Updates and Land Use Projects

LADOT is currently reviewing the Destination Pico proposal to add a crosswalk at San Vicente and Genesee.

Destination Pico is working on a Small Business Saturday event to be held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We will share more details as they become available.

The owner of Mad Lab Coffee and Joe's Pizza presented two proposals at the Pico NC land use meeting in July. The first proposal is for a food hall type restaurant with three dining options and an ice cream shop, along with a full liquor license, to be built at 5510 Pico. The second proposal is to obtain a liquor license to convert Okay Liquor at 5500 Pico into an up-market bar. The approval for both proposals will be discussed at the full Pico NC Board meeting on August 14th.

There is a proposal for another marijuana shop to open next to Bloom. We are gathering more details on the CD10 approval status.

The CD10 office is working to clean up the excessive trash around Fairfax and Pico. The trash bins are being abused due to the costs of non-city trash pick up, but this has led to an increase in improperly placed trash deposits. As a solution, they are now considering reducing the number of trash bins in the area.

Construction has begun at the previous Walgreens location, 5843 Pico, to develop a mixed-use residential and commercial building. We are anticipating the project's completion and will keep the community updated as the project continues.
